Hamm sits on the eastern side of the city, close to the plateau that carries on towards the airport. It is one of the quieter quarters, with a clear residential character, green surroundings and none of the commercial density of the central quarters.
Housing here leans towards houses and larger apartments rather than small units, often with gardens. It suits people who want space inside the city boundary without moving to a commuter town.
Quiet has a cost: limited shops and restaurants, and a dependence on bus connections or a car. Hamm works for households organised around a car and less well for someone arriving without one.
The quarter is served by the AVL bus network rather than the tram, with tram connections a short ride away. All public transport in Luxembourg is free.

Hamm's origins go back to the Convent of Saint Catherine, founded in the fourteenth century. In 1835, wool spinning and weaving mills opened on the Alzette, and the Godchaux family later combined them into the Draperies de Luxembourg, which employed up to 2,000 workers at their peak. Hamm became a separate commune on 20 December 1873, after its residents petitioned to leave Sandweiler, and it was merged into Luxembourg City on 26 March 1920, together with Hollerich and Rollingergrund.
With around 1,600 residents on some 4 square kilometres, Hamm is one of the least densely populated quarters of the capital. Much of its territory is green space, woodland and institutional land.
Hamm's housing leans towards houses and larger apartments, often with gardens. Supply is limited and weighted towards families. For buyers, it is one of the rare places inside the city limits where a house with a garden can be found. See our article on the eastern quarters.
Local services are limited; residents shop in neighbouring quarters or by car. The quarter is calm, with little evening life.
Woodland walks and green surroundings are Hamm's main assets. Families value the space and the calm; schools are within reach in neighbouring quarters.
Bus lines connect Hamm to the centre, Cents and Kirchberg. The airport is close, which suits frequent flyers. By car, the motorway network is quickly reached. All public transport is free, but a car remains useful here.
Hamm is home to about 1,606 residents on 4.08 km², a density of roughly 394 people per km², which makes it the 23th most densely populated of the 23 quarters in our guides. Around 43% of residents hold Luxembourgish nationality, higher than the city-wide share of about 31% (137,696 residents at the end of 2025, according to the City of Luxembourg). That gives it a more settled, local character than most of the capital.
Hamm's story begins with the convent of St Catharine, founded in the fourteenth century, around which a village grew. From 1835, wool spinning and weaving mills were built near the Alzette, and the Godchaux family expanded them into the Draperies de Luxembourg, which at their height employed up to 2,000 workers. Hamm split from the commune of Sandweiler in 1873 and joined the city in 1920. A walk today crosses quiet residential streets and woodland, and leads to the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial, the resting place of 5,076 American servicemen, among them General George S. Patton. It is one of the most moving places in the country and is open to visitors throughout the year.
Hamm is a quiet quarter in every season. Its woods are at their best in autumn, and the American Cemetery is visited especially around commemorations of the Second World War. It is one of the closest residential quarters to the airport, and residents who fly often value that more than any event calendar.
