A Closer Look at Cents

Cents occupies the eastern plateau, above the Alzette valley and within easy reach of the airport side of the city. It is a residential quarter in the straightforward sense: streets of houses and low apartment buildings, schools, and green edges where the plateau drops away towards the valley.

Much of the housing is post-war and later, with a steady supply of newer apartment developments. Units tend to be family-sized rather than studio-sized, and outdoor space is more common here than in the central quarters.

Cents is quiet, which is the point, but it means limited evening life and a dependence on the bus network. It works best for people whose workplace is on the eastern side of the city or at Kirchberg, and less well for anyone who wants to walk home from the old town.

Transport and connections

The quarter is served by the AVL bus network rather than the tram, with tram connections a short ride away. All public transport in Luxembourg is free.

Who Cents suits

History in brief

Cents sits on a plateau about 60 metres above Clausen and Neudorf, east of the old town. Its name comes from a tax, a cens, paid by the tenants of the Fetschenhof farm to the Altmünster Abbey, to which the land had been donated in 1292. The plateau's position made it strategically important: during the siege of Luxembourg in 1683 and 1684, French artillery on the Kéibierg fired thousands of projectiles at the city, before Marshal de Créquy captured it and Vauban rebuilt its fortifications. During the French siege of 1794 and 1795, an entrenchment was dug at the Fetschenhof. Cents became part of Luxembourg City in 1920.

Streets and landmarks

  • The Fetschenhof plateau, historically a strategic position.
  • The Kéibierg, the height between the Grund and Clausen.
  • The Stade de Cents, home of FC RM Hamm Benfica, with a capacity of 2,800.
  • Residential streets of houses and low apartment buildings, with wooded slopes at the edges.

Who lives here

Around 6,600 people live in Cents. It is the only quarter of the capital where Luxembourgish nationals form a majority of residents, which gives it a distinctly local, settled character compared with the international centre.

Housing and the rental market

Cents offers family houses and apartment buildings, mostly post-war and later, with a steady supply of new developments. Outdoor space and family-sized homes are more common than in the central quarters; studios and rooms are rare. See our article on the eastern quarters.

Shopping, food and daily services

Local shops and services cover daily needs; larger shopping means a short trip to Kirchberg or elsewhere. Evening life is limited.

Families, schools and green space

Schools and green edges make Cents one of the capital's family quarters. Wooded slopes descend towards the valleys on either side.

Getting around in practice

Bus lines link Cents to the centre, the station and Kirchberg. A cycle and pedestrian bridge with a lift connecting Cents, Neudorf-Weimershof and the Kirchberg plateau is planned, with completion targeted for 2028, which would shorten the journey to Kirchberg considerably. All public transport is free.

Before you sign: what to check in Cents

  • Bus connection to work. Especially if you work in the south of the city.
  • Slopes. Some streets are steep.
  • Future bridge. Ask how close a home is to the planned connection.

Who lives in Cents

Cents is home to about 6,618 residents on 1.73 km², a density of roughly 3,823 people per km², which makes it the 7th most densely populated of the 23 quarters in our guides. Around 50% of residents hold Luxembourgish nationality, higher than the city-wide share of about 31% (137,696 residents at the end of 2025, according to the City of Luxembourg). That gives it a more settled, local character than most of the capital.

A walk through Cents

Cents is a plateau quarter, sixty metres above Clausen and Neudorf, and a walk here is about open views rather than monuments. From the western edge, paths drop towards the Alzette valley along the slopes known locally as the Kéibierg and the Kuhberg; from the plateau itself, residential streets of houses and low buildings spread east towards the Fetschenhof and Hamm. The local stadium, Luxembourg-Cents, with a capacity of around 2,800, is home to the football club FC RM Hamm Benfica. The history is older than it looks: the plateau was the scene of the French sieges of the fortress in 1683–1684 and 1794–1795, when artillery positioned on these heights bombarded the city.

Cents through the year

Cents is a quarter of routines: school runs, sports clubs, gardens in summer and quiet winter evenings. There are no festivals to speak of, which is exactly what residents like. A planned bridge for pedestrians and cyclists, with a lift, linking Cents, Neudorf and the Kirchberg plateau, is due for completion in 2028 according to published plans, and should shorten the journey to the offices of Kirchberg considerably for people who walk or cycle.
