Neudorf runs along the valley floor east of the centre, a long quarter following the line of the river and the road below the Kirchberg plateau. Its shape is unusual: it is more of a corridor than a block, which gives different parts of it quite different characters.
Housing is mainly apartment buildings and houses of varied age, generally more affordable than the plateau above. The proximity to Kirchberg without Kirchberg prices is its main draw.
The valley carries a main road, so traffic noise varies a great deal along its length. The climb to Kirchberg is short in distance and steep in practice.
The quarter is served by the AVL bus network rather than the tram, with tram connections a short ride away. All public transport in Luxembourg is free.

Officially called Neudorf-Weimershof, the quarter stretches along the valley east of the centre, below the Kirchberg plateau, towards the north-east of the city. Around 7,200 people live here, on an area of about 2.5 square kilometres, and some three quarters of residents are not Luxembourgish, reflecting the pull of the European institutions and banks just above.
Its shape matters more than its name. Neudorf is long rather than compact, following the line of the valley road, and different stretches have different characters: some parts feel like a village street, others like a through-route, and the Weimershof side climbs towards the plateau.
The main road through the valley is the quarter's spine and its main source of traffic. Along it and on the slopes around it, Neudorf mixes older village houses, post-war apartment buildings and newer residential projects. The Alzette and the green slopes that separate Neudorf from Cents and Kirchberg give the quarter its natural setting.
A significant project is planned for the area: a cycle and pedestrian bridge with a lift connecting Cents, Neudorf-Weimershof and the Kirchberg plateau, with completion targeted for 2028. If it goes ahead as planned, it will shorten the climb between the valley and the plateau considerably.
Neudorf's housing is mixed: apartment buildings of varied age, houses, and some recent developments. Its main attraction is price. Homes here are generally more affordable than on the Kirchberg plateau, while being minutes away from it. That makes Neudorf a popular compromise for people who work at Kirchberg but do not want to pay Kirchberg prices.
Rooms and studios exist, but the quarter's supply is weighted towards apartments for couples and families. Our article on Neudorf explores the rental picture in more depth.
Local shops, bakeries, supermarkets and a handful of cafés and restaurants cover daily needs. For larger shopping, the Kirchberg shopping centre is close by bus. The Kirchberg hospital is also within easy reach.
Primary schools serve the quarter, and the European School in Kirchberg is close for families who qualify. The green slopes of the valley and the paths along the river give Neudorf a softer, greener feel than its main road suggests.
Neudorf is served by AVL bus lines towards the centre, the station and Kirchberg. The tram runs on the plateau above, reachable by bus or on foot via a steep climb. By car, the valley road gives direct access towards the east and the motorway network. All public transport is free.
Neudorf is home to about 7,178 residents on 2.49 km², a density of roughly 2,884 people per km², which makes it the 13th most densely populated of the 23 quarters in our guides. Around 25% of residents hold Luxembourgish nationality, lower than the city-wide share of about 31% (137,696 residents at the end of 2025, according to the City of Luxembourg). Like the capital as a whole, it is a genuinely international place to live.
Neudorf is a corridor rather than a block: it follows the Alzette valley north-east from Clausen, directly below the Kirchberg plateau, with Weimershof on the higher ground at its eastern end. A walk along the Rue de Neudorf, the long street that carries most of the quarter's shops, cafés and daily life, shows how varied it is: older village houses, twentieth-century apartment blocks and new residential buildings side by side. Paths and steep streets climb towards Kirchberg, a few hundred metres away in distance and around a hundred metres above in height. The official district, Neudorf-Weimershof, is home to about 7,200 residents, three quarters of them of non-Luxembourgish nationality.
Neudorf's rhythm is set by Kirchberg above it: commuters in the morning and evening, a calm residential life in between. A planned pedestrian and cycle bridge with a lift, linking Cents, Neudorf and the Kirchberg plateau, is due for completion in 2028 according to published plans, and should make the daily climb much easier for people who walk or cycle to work.
