Beggen sits in the northern part of the city, strung along the Alzette valley between Dommeldange and the northern boundary. It grew around industry rather than around a market square, and that history still shapes it: the quarter mixes workshops and commercial buildings with ordinary residential streets, which is unusual inside a capital city and is exactly why it stays more affordable than the plateau quarters above it.
Housing is mostly older apartment buildings and terraced houses, with pockets of newer construction. Rooms and smaller flats here are typically priced below what the same space costs in Limpertsberg or Belair, which makes Beggen one of the more realistic entry points into the city for someone arriving on a first Luxembourg salary.
The trade-off is character and walkability. Beggen is not a quarter you move to for cafés and evening life, and the valley position means the climb to the plateau is a real one. Most residents rely on the bus network or a car for anything beyond daily shopping.
The quarter is served by the AVL bus network rather than the tram, with tram connections a short ride away. All public transport in Luxembourg is free.

Beggen lies along the Alzette at the northern edge of the capital. Like its neighbours Dommeldange and Eich, it grew around the valley's industries rather than around a market square. Its best-known building, the Château de Beggen, was built in the nineteenth century on the ruins of an eighteenth-century paper mill. It has had a remarkable life: residence of a director of the steel company ARBED, headquarters of the German occupation forces during the Second World War, base for the American forces at the liberation, hotel, Soviet embassy and, today, the embassy of the Russian Federation in Luxembourg.
Around 3,800 people live in Beggen, on about 1.7 square kilometres. Most are not Luxembourgish; many are working professionals and families drawn by the prices.
Housing is mostly older apartment buildings and terraced houses, with pockets of new construction. Rooms and smaller flats are typically priced below comparable space in Limpertsberg or Belair, which makes Beggen one of the more realistic entry points into the capital on a first salary. See our article on the northern valley quarters.
Local shops and bakeries cover daily needs; for larger shopping, Kirchberg or the shopping areas north of the city are close by car or bus.
The riverside paths and the green slopes give Beggen space to walk and play, and the nearby Dommeldange park and Grünewald forest add more. Schools serve the northern quarters.
Bus lines link Beggen to the centre and Kirchberg, and Dommeldange station is close. By car, the valley road leads north towards Walferdange and the motorway. All public transport is free.
Beggen is home to about 3,844 residents on 1.71 km², a density of roughly 2,249 people per km², which makes it the 16th most densely populated of the 23 quarters in our guides. Around 34% of residents hold Luxembourgish nationality, higher than the city-wide share of about 31% (137,696 residents at the end of 2025, according to the City of Luxembourg). Like the capital as a whole, it is a genuinely international place to live.
Start at the northern end of the quarter, where the Alzette valley opens out and the city starts to feel like countryside. The riverside paths are the backbone of a walk here: flat, green and used by runners and cyclists at every hour. Heading south along the valley road you pass the Château de Beggen, a nineteenth-century residence built on the ruins of an eighteenth-century paper mill. It has had a remarkable life, from the home of the director general of the steelmaker ARBED to a wartime headquarters and, today, the embassy of the Russian Federation, so it is seen from the street rather than visited. From there the residential streets climb the slopes to the west, towards Mühlenbach and the edge of the forest, while the valley floor carries on towards Dommeldange and its park.
Beggen is at its best from spring to autumn, when the river paths and the green slopes are in full use and the local football club, FC Avenir Beggen, plays at home. Winters are quieter and darker on the valley floor than on the plateau, and it is worth checking how a home is heated before the first cold months. Because the quarter is not a destination for visitors, it does not change much with the calendar: no festival crowds, no summer rush, simply an ordinary residential rhythm.
| What residents appreciate | What to weigh up |
|---|---|
| Rents and prices usually below the plateau quarters | Few cafés and restaurants in the evening |
| Green riverside paths and open space | Valley position means less winter sun on the lowest streets |
| Calm streets with little through traffic away from the main road | Most journeys rely on the bus or a car |
| Close to Dommeldange station and the roads north | The main valley road can be busy at rush hour |
| Quarter | Residents | People per km² | Luxembourgish | Tram in the quarter |

| Beggen | 3,844 | 2,249 | 34% | No, buses |
