Muhlenbach occupies a narrow valley in the north of the city, between Eich and the higher ground towards Limpertsberg. It is small, almost entirely residential, and quieter than its proximity to the centre would suggest.
Housing is mostly houses and small apartment buildings, typically older. It is not a quarter with large developments, and availability is correspondingly limited.
The valley setting means slopes and limited through traffic, which is pleasant to live with and awkward to arrive at. Services are minimal, so daily shopping happens in the neighbouring quarters.
The quarter is served by the AVL bus network rather than the tram, with tram connections a short ride away. All public transport in Luxembourg is free.

Mühlenbach, Millebaach in Luxembourgish, takes its name from the stream that once drove mills in its valley. The district covers about 3.1 square kilometres in the north-west of the city, much of it green slopes and woodland, and is home to around 2,500 people. Its residential core is compact, which is why it feels smaller than its official area suggests.
Mühlenbach is one of the calmest quarters of the capital. It has almost no offices, few shops and little traffic that does not belong there. Residents choose it for exactly that: quiet within a short distance of the centre and Kirchberg.
Housing is mostly older houses and small apartment buildings, with few new developments. Homes come to the market rarely. Prices are generally moderate for the proximity to the centre. Rooms and studios are uncommon. See our article on Rollingergrund and Mühlenbach.
Services are minimal. Daily shopping is done in Eich, Limpertsberg, Rollingergrund or further afield.
Green slopes and woodland make Mühlenbach pleasant for families who value calm and nature. Schools are in neighbouring quarters.
Buses connect Mühlenbach to the centre and neighbouring districts. The tram in Limpertsberg is a short bus ride away. The valley's slopes make walking and cycling more demanding. Many households use a car. All public transport is free.
Muhlenbach is home to about 2,497 residents on 3.11 km², a density of roughly 803 people per km², which makes it the 20th most densely populated of the 23 quarters in our guides. Around 33% of residents hold Luxembourgish nationality, higher than the city-wide share of about 31% (137,696 residents at the end of 2025, according to the City of Luxembourg). Like the capital as a whole, it is a genuinely international place to live.
Mühlenbach grew along a stream that once drove many mills: a flour mill is recorded in the thirteenth century, and in the early eighteenth century the Jesuits built a paper mill where the very first Luxembourgish paper was made. Horticulturists later settled here to supply the city's markets. The quarter covers about 311 hectares in the far north of the city, but much of it is the Bambësch forest, which accounts for around 13% of the city's woodland. A walk starts on the residential streets of the valley, passes the church of Saint-Fiacre, built in 1962–1963, and climbs into the forest. Until 1849 Mühlenbach belonged to Eich, then to the commune of Rollingergrund, and it joined the city in 1920.
With the Bambësch on its doorstep, Mühlenbach is a quarter for walkers and runners in every season. Autumn colours and winter walks in the forest are part of daily life. There are no events to speak of; that is the point.
