Registering With Your Commune: Your First Weeks in Luxembourg
Shortly after arriving in Luxembourg, residents are required to register their address with the commune (local municipal authority) covering the area they live in. This is a foundational step — many other administrative processes rely on it.
You'll generally need your passport or ID, a rental contract or written confirmation from your landlord, and sometimes a birth certificate or proof of civil status, depending on your situation. Appointments can usually be booked online through the commune's website.
Once registered, you'll receive a certificate of residence, which is often required to open a bank account, apply for a residence permit if you're a non-EU citizen, or enrol children in school.
Because this step requires a confirmed address, it's one more reason to have your room or apartment secured early — it's the key that unlocks most of the rest of the settling-in process.
