How to Open a Bank Account in Luxembourg as a Newcomer

One of the first practical tasks after moving to Luxembourg is opening a local bank account. Most landlords expect rent to be paid by local transfer, and most employers pay salaries into a Luxembourg IBAN, so it's worth sorting early.

You'll typically need a valid ID or passport, proof of address (a signed lease or your commune registration certificate works well), and proof of income or an employment contract. Some banks will open an account before you have a fixed address, but the process is smoother once you do.

Luxembourg has a mix of traditional retail banks with branch networks and a number of fully digital options that let you open an account remotely in a matter of days. Which one suits you depends on whether you value in-person service or speed and simplicity.

A small but useful tip: having your bank account set up before you start viewing rooms or apartments means you can move on a good listing immediately, rather than losing time to paperwork once you've found the right place.
