Moving to Luxembourg: what you need to know

Moving countries always comes with a to-do list, and Luxembourg's is refreshingly short compared with many EU neighbours — but a few steps are worth doing in the right order to avoid delays.

EU citizens need to register with their commune within a few days of arrival; non-EU citizens will also need a residence permit sorted before or shortly after arrival. Both processes are fairly quick, but require an address — which is usually why housing comes first, before some of the other paperwork.

Once you're registered, opening a local bank account, getting a phone plan and enrolling in the health insurance system tend to follow naturally, and most employers will help guide new hires through this.

Public transport is free throughout the country, which makes it genuinely practical to look slightly further from the centre without sacrificing convenience — something worth keeping in mind while house-hunting rather than fixating only on distance to the office.
