How to rent a room in Luxembourg: a complete guide
Renting a room is the most common first step for professionals moving to Luxembourg, and for good reason: it's faster to arrange than a full lease, often comes furnished, and lets you get to know a neighbourhood before committing longer-term.
A written contract is standard practice, even for a single room, and should clearly state the monthly rent, what's included (utilities, cleaning, internet), the notice period, and the security deposit amount — legally capped at a maximum of three months' rent in Luxembourg.
Most landlords will ask for proof of income or an employment contract, a copy of ID, and sometimes a reference from a previous landlord. Having these ready before you start viewing rooms will noticeably speed up the process in a competitive market.
Move-in day should include a written inventory (état des lieux) noting the condition of the room and any furniture — this protects both sides and is what your deposit refund will be checked against when you eventually move out.
