The Hidden Costs of Renting a Room in Luxembourg

The advertised rent for a room is a useful starting point, but rarely the full monthly cost. Before signing anything, it's worth asking exactly what's included and what isn't — the difference between listings can be significant.

Utilities (electricity, heating, water) and internet are sometimes bundled into a flat monthly charge, and sometimes billed separately based on usage. Building or service charges, covering things like cleaning of common areas or building maintenance, are another common add-on.

Then there's the upfront cost: a security deposit, commonly one to three months' rent, plus sometimes an agency fee if you found the room through a letting agent rather than directly from the owner.

A good rule of thumb: ask for the full monthly cost in writing before you commit, not just the headline rent, and get the same breakdown for every room you're comparing so you're weighing like for like.
