Free Public Transport: Getting Around Luxembourg Without a Car

In 2020, Luxembourg became the first country in the world to abolish fares on public transport nationwide, covering trains, trams and buses across the entire country (first class on trains is the one exception, which still requires a ticket).

In practice, this means the tram line connecting the station, the city centre and Kirchberg, along with an extensive bus network, are all free to use — a genuine cost saving and a big part of why so many residents get by comfortably without a car.

For house-hunting, this changes the maths on 'distance from the centre'. A well-connected room in Bonnevoie or Merl, close to a tram or bus stop, can offer a shorter and more comfortable commute than a more central address without good transport links.

When we show properties, we always flag the nearest stop and typical journey time to the centre — it's often more useful than the straight-line distance on a map.
